LYNNFIELD, MASS. — A driver who caused the wrong-way crash that killed Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor in May had a blood-alcohol content more than twice the legal limit at the time of the collision, according to a report released Wednesday by the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.

Hernan Marrero, driving the wrong way on the northbound side of Route 1 in Lynnfield, struck Trainor’s cruiser head-on around 1 a.m. on May 6 as the trooper responded to a 911 call reporting the wrong-way vehicle. Both Marrero and Trainor were killed; Marrero died at the scene, and Trainor died later at a hospital.
District Attorney Paul Tucker said an accident reconstructionist determined Marrero’s wrong-way driving was not caused by any defect or malfunction of his vehicle or any issue with roadway signage, and that the collision resulted directly from Marrero’s actions. According to the report, Marrero’s BAC measured 0.192, and he had consumed nine alcoholic beverages between 9:20 p.m. on May 5 and 12:53 a.m. on May 6 at two restaurants before the crash.
Trainor, 30, became a state trooper in 2023 after previously serving as a corrections officer with the Essex County Sheriff’s Office. He worked as a field training officer and was assigned to Troop A’s Community Action Team.
Trainor is survived by his fiancée, Jessica Ostrowski; his mother, Barbara; siblings David, Stephen and Melissa Trainor and Matthew Trainor; and extended family.
