SYRACUSE, NY—A Syracuse police officer ran into a burning home on Syracuse’s Far Westside Friday to alert residents to get out.
Around 10 a.m., a 9-1-1 caller reported that a fire started by a candle had spread inside 114 Coykendall Ave., according to Syracuse Deputy Fire Chief Leonard Danielwicz.
When firefighters arrived four minutes later there was heavy fire and smoke coming from the left side of the building Danielwicz said.
One woman was able to get out of the house on her own before firefighters arrived, Danielwicz said.
A police officer ran into the burning home to warn six residents on the second floor that a fire was spreading and they needed to get out, Danielwicz said. All the residents on the second floor were able to get out of the home safely.
One woman was evaluated for smoke inhalation but did not need to be transported to the hospital, Danielwicz said.
Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control in around 30 minutes.
The home sustained significant damage and is uninhabitable, Danielwicz said. A neighboring home also sustained minor damage on the siding of the building, he said.
