BROOKFIELD, CT—The local police department’s K-9 continues to work patrol after being diagnosed with cancer.

K-9 Major — a member of the Brookfield police force since November 2017 — was recently diagnosed with lymphoma, a common cancer in dogs.

“We have been told life expectancy is between one and three months, yet we are hopeful he will beat those odds,” the Brookfield Police Department said in a statement Thursday.

The 8-year-old German shepherd has worked alongside his handler, Cpl. Joseph Kyek, for over five years and is trained in patrol and narcotics detection.

“Please keep Major and Corporal Kyek in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate through this tough time,” the police department said.

In the wake of K-9 Major’s recent diagnosis, Kyek has decided to continue patrolling with his canine companion.

“Currently, Major’s working status is day-to-day as his handler … has decided as long as he is capable, they will still work patrol because that is what Major loves to do,” according to Thursday’s statement from the police department.
