The incident occurred around 12:40 a.m. on the northbound side of the highway near mile marker 5.6, according to the Uxbridge Police Department and town officials. Boston 25 News

Officer Stephen LaPorta, 43, of Uxbridge was helping a motorist at the roadside when he was struck by a passing vehicle, police said. Boston 25 News

Emergency responders performed lifesaving efforts at the scene, but LaPorta was pronounced dead after sustaining fatal injuries, officials said. Boston 25 News
