SOLANO COUNTY, CA — A Solano County Sheriff’s Office K-9 was seriously injured after a suspect stabbed the dog multiple times during an incident following a slow-speed pursuit along Interstate 80, authorities said.
Deputies initially attempted to stop a vehicle traveling at unusually slow speeds on I-80 in Dixon early Tuesday, which they said posed a hazard to other motorists. The driver did not yield, prompting a slow pursuit.
Law enforcement officials said a spike strip deployed near Interstate 80 and Travis Boulevard in Fairfield disabled the vehicle, but the situation remained unsettled after it stopped.
According to the Solano County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect refused repeated commands to surrender, leading to the deployment of K-9 Ty to assist deputies with the arrest. During the encounter, the suspect allegedly stabbed the K-9 in the neck and leg multiple times.
The handler pulled the injured dog from harm’s way, and Ty was treated at the Solano-Napa Pet Emergency Clinic before being transferred for further care. Authorities said the K-9 survived and was recovering at home.
The suspect was taken into custody at the scene, medically cleared at a local hospital and booked into the Solano County Jail, officials said. Additional details about charges and next steps in the investigation have not been released.
