(GREENVILLE COUNTY, SC —) A deputy with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office has adopted a young girl she first encountered while responding to a call for service in 2023, officials said.

The adoption was finalized Jan. 12 after what the sheriff’s office described as a “lengthy and difficult legal journey.” Authorities withheld the child’s name and age and did not disclose details of the original incident to protect her privacy.
Deputy Britanie Bratcher met the girl during a response in 2023 and later pursued guardianship, the sheriff’s office said, characterizing the decision as driven by “unconditional love, stability and hope” for the child.
Sheriff’s officials commended the actions as an example of service that “went above and beyond the call of law enforcement” and noted the adoption provides the girl with a “forever home.”
At publishing time, the sheriff’s office did not provide additional details on the process or the deputy’s future role with the agency.
