The event occurred outside Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the city’s mayor, when two suspects allegedly threw improvised explosive devices at a protest march. As one suspect prepared to throw a second device, Assistant Chief Edwards jumped over a barrier and tackled him to the ground, according to city officials.

Meanwhile, Sergeant Navarro ran toward a second device that had been dropped on the street and was smoking and lit, removing it from the vicinity of protesters and officers “without hesitation and without regard for his own safety,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a press briefing.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Commissioner Tisch publicly acknowledged both officers on Monday, saying their prompt response helped prevent what authorities described as a potentially more serious attack. Mamdani also met with the officers privately to thank them for their actions.

Federal authorities have charged the two suspects with terrorism-related offenses, and the New York Police Department’s Counterterrorism Bureau is continuing its investigation with support from federal partners.

Officials said additional security measures, including increased counterterrorism resources throughout the city, remain in place as authorities work to assess any ongoing risk.
