NEW YORK — The NYPD released body-worn camera video showing a Brooklyn officer shot in the face with a shotgun at close range before he returned fire and fatally wounded the gunman during a confrontation inside a Brownsville apartment building, officials said. Officer Sharjeel Waris, 25, was treated for facial injuries consistent with birdshot and released from the hospital later that day. Police1+1

The shooting occurred around 7:45 a.m. on Nov. 17 as officers guarded evidence from an earlier homicide in the same building at 1046 Thomas S. Boyland Street. Investigators said the suspect suddenly opened a first-floor apartment door and fired a shotgun into the hallway, striking Waris. The officer returned fire, and the assailant retreated into the unit and was later found deadamNewYork+1

Authorities identified the suspect as Dashawn (Anthony) Larode, 24. Police said a shotgun was recovered in the apartment. Waris, a four-year NYPD veteran assigned to the 73rd Precinct, was in stable condition following treatment and “in good spirits,” officials said. CBS News+1

The incident unfolded while officers secured a shotgun shell and other evidence related to the separate killing of a 41-year-old man discovered outside the building earlier that morning. City leaders praised the officer’s response and noted that two other officers were injured in a vehicle crash while responding to the shooting; both were expected to recover. Police1+1

The NYPD said the bodycam clip was released as part of its critical-incident transparency policies. Homicide and force investigations remain ongoing. Police1
