SYRACUSE, N.Y.—A woman is facing more charges after declaring she was leaving and then attempting to grab a deputy’s gun while being taken to a hospital from the jail, deputies said.
Victoria Searle, 37, of Syracuse was being taken from the Onondaga County Justice Center jail to Upstate University Hospital on Jan. 5 when she attempted to escape, said Tom Newton, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.
Searle was restrained and on a stretcher when she stood up and said she was leaving, Newton said. She then grabbed a deputy’s gun and attempted to take it out of the holster. Deputies managed to stop her and restrain her again, he said.
Searle was in jail because she faces multiple petit larceny charges and a possession of a forged instrument charge, according to jail records. After her attempted escape she was charged with second-degree attempted escape, second-degree attempted possession of a firearm, and third-degree attempted robbery, Newton said.
