PRUNEDALE, CA — Monterey County sheriff’s deputies and California Highway Patrol officers rescued a man Saturday who was threatening to jump from the San Miguel Canyon Road overpass above U.S. Highway 101, authorities said.

Officials received a report of a suicidal individual on the bridge around 11:30 a.m. and responded along with Crisis Intervention Services, North County Fire District and American Medical Response.

Negotiators from the sheriff’s office and CHP attempted for about two hours to talk the man down, but he remained on the bridge railing, officials said.

When the man repositioned himself as if preparing to jump, deputies and CHP officers physically pulled him back to safety, then transported him to Natividad Medical Center where he was placed on a 5150 hold for mental health evaluation.

Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto commended the swift actions of the deputies and officers involved in preventing the man from harming himself.
