CHRISTIAN COUNTY, MO — A probation officer in southwest Missouri has initiated a petition-driven campaign to advocate for changes to state bail and bond laws following the fatal shootings of two Christian County sheriff’s deputies.

Deputies Gabriel Ramirez, 30, and Michael Hislope, 40, were killed Feb. 23 after responding to a traffic stop with a suspect who had been released on a $50,000 bond on burglary and related charges days earlier, authorities said.

Patricia “Val” Drinkall said she launched the petition to bar bond for violent repeat offenders and to address concerns about public safety and judicial discretion in setting bail, saying the deaths of her friends were preventable.

The campaign has drawn signatures and attention from residents and lawmakers in the region, with discussions underway about how bond practices intersect with risks posed by defendants with significant criminal histories.

State officials and legal experts said bail decisions remain under judicial authority, and any statutory changes would require legislative action.
