A Miami-Dade County police detective is in stable condition after a fiery crash early Friday morning in Miami Gardens.
The crash closed a two-block stretch of the road for hours through morning rush-hour traffic.
The detective, who police have not named, was driving his county-issued car west on Northwest 183rd Street and 12th Avenue around 4:20 a.m. when it collided with another car that was heading east.
Both cars caught fire, said Detective Luis Sierra, a Miami-Dade police spokesman.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue paramedics took the detective and a female passenger in the other car to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital. Both were listed in stable condition later Friday morning, Sierra said. Police said the woman had burns to her body.
The driver of the other car was treated at the scene of the crash for “minor cuts,” according to police.
Police did not immediately say whether the detective was on duty at the time of the crash, which is under investigation.
