ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, Md. — A Maryland police department released a statement this week informing social media users that the department would be disabling social media comments due to a “divisive and hateful” climate.

According to ABC 7 News, the Anne Arundel County Police Department plans to disable their comments on Twitter and Facebook. A department spokesperson said commenters can now use the anonymous tip line to provide information on crimes.

“Users have commented and noticed an increase in scammers and catfishers preying on commenters,” the department’s Facebook post read.

Earlier this year, a Florida sheriff announced he would also be disabling comments on the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office page because the comment section was frequently misused as a tip line, making it difficult to identify crime tips in a timely manner.
