CICERO, NY — A man has been charged with allegedly using artificial intelligence to impersonate the police chief of Cicero, New York, in an attempted scam, authorities announced.

Police said the suspect sent emails and text messages that appeared to come from Cicero Police Chief Thomas Fricchione, asking recipients to take specific actions or provide funds. Recipients who questioned the communications’ authenticity reported the messages to law enforcement.

Investigators determined the messages were generated using artificial intelligence tools and that the defendant did not have authorization to act on behalf of the police department, officials said. The suspect was taken into custody and charged with impersonation, identity theft and related offenses.

Law enforcement officials warned that emerging technologies can be misused to craft convincing fake communications and encouraged community members to verify unexpected requests, particularly those involving public officials or financial transactions.
