LOS ANGELES, CA — Los Angeles County Sheriff’s detectives fatally shot an armed robbery suspect after he pointed a handgun at them during an attempted robbery in the parking lot of a West Hills shopping plaza on Jan. 22, authorities said.
Surveillance and body-worn camera footage released by the Sheriff’s Department shows the suspect confronting the detectives as they were conducting surveillance related to a series of armed robberies, according to officials.
The incident unfolded just after 8:30 p.m. in the 6600 block of Fallbrook Avenue, where a female victim was approached in the plaza’s parking lot. The suspect allegedly chased the woman and attempted to rob her while armed with a handgun, the department said.
When detectives exited their unmarked vehicle to intervene, the suspect turned and pointed his firearm at them, prompting at least one detective to fire, officials said. The suspect continued to discharge his weapon as he fell and was struck, according to the department.
The victim suffered minor injuries but did not require hospitalization, and no deputies were reported injured. A getaway driver was later taken into custody after a brief pursuit, sheriff’s officials said.
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing, and authorities have not released additional details about the suspect or charges filed.
