WASHINGTON, DC — Cyber actors linked to Iran have accessed the personal email account of Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Kash Patel, and some material from that account has been published online, U.S. law enforcement officials said Friday.
The FBI confirmed the breach involved Patel’s non-government email and that the exposed content is historical in nature, not including federal systems or classified information, according to sources cited by major news organizations.
A group identifying itself as the Handala Hack Team, believed by cybersecurity researchers to be linked to Iranian cyber intelligence activity, took responsibility for the conduct, posting emails, photos and other documents it said were obtained from the account.
Published materials reportedly included personal correspondence and images of Patel in casual settings, though the authenticity of all content has not been independently verified, sources familiar with the matter said.
Federal authorities said steps have been taken to mitigate potential risks from the breach, and investigations are ongoing to establish how the account was accessed and whether additional data was exposed.
No indication has been reported that FBI networks or sensitive government information were compromised in the incident.
