An Indiana deputy died when he suddenly became ill during a training exercise Thursday.

Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Deputy Asson Hacker was participating in training in Evansville when he became sick and eventually loss consciousness, the agency stated in a press release. He was rushed to the hospital by Evansville police officers, but “heroic lifesaving efforts” were unsuccessful.

Hacker, 33, had been with the sheriff’s office since December and was completing his Tier One basic training. He is survived by his wife and three young children.

“Additional details will be released in the coming days,” the sheriff’s office stated. “We ask for patience during this difficult period for our Office.”
