LUDLOW, MA — The Hampden County Sheriff’s Office announced staffing cuts Wednesday as part of a multi-phase plan to reduce expenditures and address a budget shortfall facing the department, Sheriff Nick Cocchi said.

Cocchi said the first phase will redefine, limit or eliminate about 50 positions, aiming to generate $3.6 million – $4 million in savings.

Officials said staff were notified Tuesday, and some changes will be implemented immediately while others will occur over the coming months to allow for transition and operational continuity.

The personnel adjustments follow the removal of approximately $26.5 million from the sheriff’s office Fiscal Year 2026 allocation after closing the previous fiscal year’s books, further compounding budget pressures.

Cocchi said community law enforcement initiatives and partnerships outside the agency’s three main facilities in Ludlow, Chicopee and Springfield will be most impacted by the changes but did not provide specific details on programs or units affected.

Officials characterized the steps as necessary to align operations with current budget realities; the status of future phases of the plan was not immediately disclosed.
