MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A Florida Highway Patrol trooper was stabbed by a wrong-way driver during a traffic stop late Sunday night, authorities said.
Troopers observed a vehicle traveling the wrong way on an interstate in Miami-Dade County and initiated a traffic stop. When the trooper approached the vehicle, the driver suddenly produced a knife and stabbed the officer before fleeing on foot, according to law enforcement officials.
Miami-Dade County sheriff’s deputies and Florida Highway Patrol personnel conducted a search of the area and located the suspect shortly after the attack. Officers took the suspect into custody without further incident.
The trooper was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the stabbing. Officials did not release the trooper’s name or condition beyond saying he was expected to recover.
Law enforcement agencies, including the Florida Highway Patrol and Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office, are investigating the incident. Authorities asked anyone with information to contact investigators as they continue to gather details.
