(GOLDEN, CO —) A Jefferson County judge on Wednesday sentenced a Colorado man to 13 years in the Department of Corrections for a drunken driving crash that killed Golden Police Department Officer Evan Dunn and injured others, officials said.

Stephen Geer, 44, of Colorado, pleaded guilty in October 2025 to one count of vehicular homicide-DUI and one count of vehicular assault-DUI in connection with the Nov. 6, 2024 collision on Colorado Highway 58 near Washington Avenue.

Authorities said Dunn and his partner, Officer Bethany Grusing, were responding to an earlier crash when Geer’s vehicle struck a parked car involved in that collision, pinning both officers underneath. Dunn died at the scene; Grusing and two other crash victims sustained serious injuries.

Prosecutors presented evidence at sentencing indicating Geer’s blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit, and the charge dismissals under his plea agreement reflected an acknowledgment that prison time was appropriate.

The sentence follows statements from Dunn’s family and department leaders during the hearing, as well as impact testimony from others affected by the crash.
