BRONX, NY — NYPD detectives investigating a fatal shooting in a Bronx apartment building hallway said they received a confession from a neighbor while seeking Ring camera footage that might have captured the incident.
Detectives knocked on the door of a 76-year-old man near the scene of the April 2 shooting of a 21-year-old man inside a hallway on Richman Plaza in Morris Heights, asking if he had video from his doorbell camera.
Instead of providing footage, the neighbor reportedly told officers, “I’m the one who shot him,” according to law enforcement sources, and he was subsequently charged with murder and manslaughter in connection with the killing.
The 21-year-old victim was shot in the chest and later died at St. Barnabas Hospital, authorities said. Family members described him as trying to quell an argument in the hallway when he was struck.
Arraignment for the suspect was pending in Bronx criminal court; investigators continue to process the case.
