BOSTON, MA — Boston police officials and city leaders outlined preparations this week aimed at addressing a potential increase in human trafficking activity as crowds gather for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to a Police1 report.

Boston Police Capt. Det. Terry Thomas told a city council hearing that the department anticipates a significant increase in human trafficking sting operations surrounding the event and plans to scale up programs already in place.

Officials noted that large sporting events have been linked to increases in sex trafficking and related violence in past years, and said this year’s World Cup preparations include expanded enforcement and community coordination.

The department is coordinating with local, regional and international partners, including FIFA, to share information and strategies as part of its planning efforts.

Councilors and public safety officials discussed the city’s overall event safety resources at the hearing, noting that Boston’s official fan zones and associated festivities will draw significant visitor numbers during the June and July matches.

Officials said details of specific operations and additional preventative measures will continue to develop as the event approaches.
