The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office says a corrections officer in the county jail was injured during an assault by an inmate Monday.

The officer, whose name was not released, was completing a walkthrough when an inmate failed to respond to the officer’s verbal commands.

When the officer opened the door and entered the cell to check on the inmate, he jumped off his bunk, screamed at her to “shut up,” and attacked her, punching her nose and face, according to court documents. After being knocked to the ground, the officer was able to quickly secure the cell.

The officer suffered injuries to her face and broke her right arm in two places. She is currently in “good spirits and recovering,” the sheriff’s office said.

The inmate, identified as Yousef Muhammad Abdi, 32, was in jail on vehicle break-in charges through Decatur police.

He has now been charged with second degree assault, and is being held on $500,000 bond.
