San Antonio police have released body camera footage that shows an officer fatally shooting a man during a confrontation in which police said the man pulled out a gun and fired while another officer was detaining him.

The incident occurred at 10:50 p.m. on Jan. 24 outside a motel in the 2100 block of Southwest Loop 410 on the far West Side. Officers were checking on a group of men sitting in a van in the parking lot, according to San Antonio police.

Video footage of the deadly struggle was uploaded by the San Antonio Police Department to YouTube in narrated and unnarrated forms.

An officer approached Edward Nandin, 50, as he was sitting in the driver’s seat. Nandin was asked to step out of the van because there were knives on the dashboard, video footage shows.

“You’ve got knives all around you,” the officer remarks.

The officer’s partner took over and began to search Nandin in the course of attempting to identify him, police said. When police asked Nandin what was in his pocket, he pulled out a black pouch suspected of having narcotics residue on it, a report states.

“I’m going to detain you because you’ve got residue right there,” the officer tells Nandin.

At that point, Nandin begins struggling, footage shows. The shooting unfolds in less than 10 seconds.

A voice, presumably that of the officer who had been searching Nandin, can be heard shouting “chill out, bro,” using explicit language. A split second later, the officer shouts, “He’s got a gun,” and a shot is heard, followed by two more shots, footage from the partner’s body camera shows.

Footage from the initial officer shows Nandin holding the gun in the air as a shot rings out, followed by the initial officer firing two shots at Nandin.

The initial officer, who was checking the van’s other occupants, ran back around upon hearing the struggle, police said.

The partner officer can be seen bringing Nandin down immediately after Nandin is hit, at which point officers began life-saving measures, police said. The partner officer was not injured in the shooting.

The Bexar County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the incident. San Antonio police said the shooting is under investigation.
