California police officers out on extra patrols caught a group of would-be thieves cutting off and stealing catalytic converters from several cars earlier this week.

The incident happened just after 3:30 a.m. Tuesday while Fontana police were on the lookout for a light color Infinity, the department stated in an online update. Officers had been keeping tabs on the vehicle on the suspicion that suspects were casing the neighborhood.

During a patrol, officers spotted an Infinity matching the suspected car’s description and saw an individual sawing a catalytic converter from a vehicle parked in a driveway. Backup was called in, and an officer’s body camera captured police apprehending the suspect.

Five catalytic converters were found in the Infinity’s trunk, which also contained other evidence of the thefts. The victims of the thefts were identified, and the stolen converters were returned.

Four people were arrested in connection with the thefts.
