A Utah police K-9 was critically injured when a man stabbed the dog during a confrontation with officers that left the suspect dead Monday.

The incident happened when Hurricane City police responded to a report of a man threatening an individual at the city’s cemetery, The Salt Lake City Tribune reports. When police reached the scene, the man began yelling at officers before fleeing in a car.

A brief chase pursued until police called off the pursuit for safety reasons. The suspect later crashed into another car after driving erratically, and he abandoned his vehicle.

Eventually, the suspect broke into a house with four people inside. The residents alerted police, and officers confronted the suspect at the home.

According to police, officers opened fire when they reached the scene, and the suspect was fatally shot. During the confrontation, a police K-9 was stabbed in the neck and rushed to an animal hospital in Las Vegas in critical condition.

Police did not release details surrounding what led to the shooting. The police department and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident.
