Mayor Mike Duggan selected Detroit’s interim police chief to continue running the city’s police department.
James White, who served as an assistant police chief in the department and executive director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, will move forward in the process to becoming Detroit’s permanent police chief. The move follows the departure of former Police Chief James Craig, who formed an “exploratory committee” to challenge Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for the next gubernatorial race.
Duggan’s selection still requires approval from the Detroit City Council.
White previously told the Free Press that he would run the police department differently than Craig. While he highlighted his leadership, White said he would move the department forward in other ways such as seeking grant funding for counseling services for Detroit police officers.
Other candidates who vied for the position include Ann Arbor Police Chief Michael Cox and Robert Dunlap, who is Wayne County Sheriff’s chief of jails and court operations.
