Jan. 26, 2023 A man wanted in a murder in north Texas was shot and killed when a shootout erupted as Dallas police officers were making “a high-risk apprehension” of the suspect.

DALLAS — A capital murder suspect was shot and killed and a Dallas officer was shot Wednesday in the Oak Cliff neighborhood, Dallas police said.
Dallas police say the suspect shot at police and officers returned fire. The officer was shot in the foot and the released from the hospital.
Multiple officers responded to the shooting that occurred in the 2500 block of Bahama Drive near Fort Worth Avenue just after 3 p.m. when police were attempting to serve an arrest warrant for the man shot and killed by police.
The suspect was in the passenger side of a vehicle that police followed to the Bahama Glen Apartments, police spokeswoman Kristin Lowman said.
When the vehicle pulled in to the complex, officers yelled for the suspect and the driver to exit the vehicle, but only the driver got out, Lowman said.The suspect opened fire and struck one officer, Lowman said. Officers returned fire, hitting the suspect. Both the suspect and officer were then hospitalized, she said.
The suspect is accused in a killing in north Texas, Lowman said without elaborating. The driver was also taken into custody, Lowman said. It is unclear whether he faces any charges.
Police declined to release the name of the person shot by police or the driver taken into custody. Police also would not say how many officers were serving the warrant.
”This was a high-risk apprehension, which is what our fugitive unit does — that’s for a violent offender,” Lowman said.
Detectives gathered Friday evening next to a red four-door sedan and a white Jeep. Bullet holes were visible in the windows of both vehicles. The passenger windows of the sedan appeared to be shattered, and several of its doors were open.
Many residents said Friday they weren’t home when the shooting occurred. They came home and saw police at the apartment complex. Some couldn’t get to their homes because police blocked off a large section of the complex with yellow crime scene tape.
Richard Everett, who lives at the complex in the building next to where the shooting happened, said he was sifting through paperwork in his bedroom when he heard two loud bangs.
”It was really loud — I don’t know what it could’ve been,” Everett said. “If it was a gun, it was a really big one.”
He said the sounds were followed by a rapid succession of gunfire, and he called 911. He said the complex is normally quiet, although it’s not uncommon to hear gunfire at night in the distance. But, he said, incidents usually don’t occur this close to home.
”I stayed out of it, I didn’t want to get out there with gunfire going,” Everett said.
The Dallas police Special Investigations Unit and the Dallas County district attorney’s office are investigating, which is customary for shootings that involve officers. Police oversight monitor Tonya McClary was at the apartment complex and said Dallas’ Office of Community Police Oversight is monitoring the investigation.
