MONTVILLE, CT—Montville police officers got resourceful Friday evening to rescue a child at the scene of a fire at the Village Apartments off Jerome Avenue.

Montville Officers Lindsey Michaels and Kenny Stuart and Lt. David Radford were first to the Village Apartments in Uncasville after a fire was reported at 4:29 p.m., Fire Marshal Paul Barnes and Montville police said. The officers found a child, who looked to be about 10 years old, hanging out a window of the second-floor apartment at the back of the building, where the fire was reported.

Acting fast, the officers pulled a cruiser up to the building and two of them climbed on top of the vehicle to rescue the child, Barnes and police said. The boy later was transported to the Backus Hospital in Norwich.

The American Red Cross of Southeastern Connecticut is assisting four of the six families displaced by the fire. Sue Rochester Bolin, senior director of emergency services for the local Red Cross, said there was extensive smoke damage that had spread to the surrounding units. Three Red Cross representatives responded to the fire.

Rochester Bolin said four families, with a total of six adults and three children, are being assisted by the Red Cross and are staying at local motels. She said two other families went to stay with family members, but she will contact them to see if they need assistance, as well.

Oakdale Fire Department, Montville Fire Department and Mohegan Tribal Fire Department also responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire was not yet determined and still was under investigation, Barnes said.
