ROCK HILL, SC—A Rock Hill police officer jumped through the open driver’s-side window into a fleeing suspect’s car Sunday and was dangling out of the window as the suspect fled from a traffic stop, according to arrest warrants and incident reports.

Rock Hill Police Department patrol officer, Tanner Hyman, 28, was not hurt in the incident Sunday, said police Lt. Michael Chavis. Hyman jumped through the driver’s window to avoid being dragged, Chavis said.

Travis Dayle Faver, 49, of Rock Hill, is now charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, failure to stop for a blue light, resisting police, use of vehicle without permission, and third-offense driving under a suspended license, according to arrest warrants and police reports obtained by The Herald.

Rock Hill police have video of the incident, Chavis said.

“If Officer Hyman had fallen out of the vehicle, death or serious injury would have occurred,” the arrest warrant for assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature states.

When Hyman told Faver to get out of the vehicle and reached to turn off the car, Faver allegedly sped off, the report stated. Hyman was dangling out of the driver’s side window for more than 30 yards before the vehicle stopped, according to arrest warrants and an incident report.

The incident happened Sunday on Black Alder Court in Rock Hill, a Rock Hill police incident report showed. Hyman found Faver asleep in a car with no license plate on it, the report stated. Another Rock Hill incident report from Sunday showed the car had been taken without the owner’s consent, police said.

Police said in a separate arrest warrant that Faver sped off from an earlier traffic stop the day before.

Faver was free on bond from a 2020 incident where he was charged with second-offense driving under a suspended license, South Carolina court records show. Faver also was convicted in January 2021 of driving under a suspended license in a trial where he failed to appear in court, York County records show.

A conviction for assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature carries up to 20 years in prison, South Carolina law states.

Faver remains in the York County jail under a $250,000 bond, records show.
