Mich. Trooper, Suspect Shot in Violent Traffic Stop

A three-year Michigan State Police trooper is in stable condition after a struggle with a car passenger during a traffic stop in Niles that ended with both individuals being shot and wounded.

BERRIEN COUNTY, MI—A state police trooper and suspect suffered gunshot wounds in a shooting during a traffic stop late Wednesday.

The three-year trooper, assigned to the Niles post, is in stable condition. The shooting suspect is in serious condition.

The shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. on Ninth Street between Regent and Main streets in the City of Niles.

The trooper had stopped the driver of a Nissan for failure to stop at a stop sign. After the driver was arrested for a suspended license, the trooper made contact with a passenger.

The passenger got out of the vehicle at the trooper’s request before a struggle ensued and shots were fired by the passenger and trooper, state police said.

Both were injured by gunshots. The trooper suffered a gunshot wound to his leg.

The state police 6th District Incident Response Team is investigating as an outside state police district.
