A Tennessee police officer was seriously wounded in a gas station gun battle with a suspect, who was fatally shot in the exchange Monday.

The shooting happened at around 9:15 p.m. when Memphis police responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle at a gas station, ABC News reports. Gunfire erupted when an officer made contact with a suspect in the vehicle.

The officer was stuck multiple times and taken to the hospital in critical condition. His condition was later upgraded to non-critical.

The suspect was also struck by gunfire in the exchange, and he fled the scene. Police discovered him in an idling vehicle, where he was pronounced dead.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting.
