A New York police officer underwent surgery after he was struck by a suspect allegedly driving a stolen vehicle during a police chase early Monday.

The incident happened at about 4:30 a.m. as Depew police responded to a report of stolen vehicles, WKBW-TV reports. A chase involving two vehicles ensued, and it stretched to Cheektowaga, where officers from that municipality joined the pursuit.

Cheektowaga Police Officer Troy Blackchief was trying to deploy stop sticks at an intersection when he was struck by one of the stolen vehicles. He was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery.

Police located one of the stolen vehicles at a gas station after it had been abandoned. The second vehicle has yet to be recovered, and no arrests have been made. 

Blackchief has been with the department for 17 years. He is a member of the patrol division and the SWAT team.
