A Newark police officer was hospitalized Tuesday after he was hit by a car reported stolen from Union County, authorities said.

The officer, whose name was not released, was on Quitman Street near Spruce Street about 11 p.m. when he spotted a vehicle that had been reported stolen from Elizabeth, according to Newark Public Safety Director Brian O’Hara.

“Upon becoming aware of police presence, the driver pulled off, striking (the) officer,” O’Hara said. The officer was taken to University Hospital, where he was in stable condition on Wednesday morning.

Police later recovered the stolen vehicle on Livingston Street. No arrests have been made and the incident is under investigation, O’Hara said.
