A Milwaukee police officer was shot and killed in a shootout Tuesday while chasing a robbery suspect, who also was fatally shot.

The incident happened at around 1:15 a.m. when police responded to a robbery scene on the city’s south side, WLS-TV reports. Once there, officers encountered a 19-year-old suspect, who fled on foot.

An officer caught up with the suspect, and the two began to struggle. Guns that the two men were carrying went off, and both were struck in the exchange.

The officer, a four-year veteran with the department, was taken to the hospital, where he died. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, and it was unclear if he was shot by the officer and suffered a self-inflicted wound.

“One of our finest, who put on that uniform, put on that badge, went into work last night has paid the ultimate sacrifice for protecting our community. Milwaukee, we need your prayers, we need your support,” said Police Chief Jeffrey Norman.

The shooting is under investigation, and the identities of the officer and suspect have not been released.

“The men and women of the Milwaukee Police Department, it’s not just them – it’s up to all of us,” said Mayor Cavalier Johnson. “Enough of this, enough of this. There’s no excuse for this. This officer should not be dead right now.”
