Massachusetts State Police troopers have recovered the patrol rifle that was stolen from a locked State Police cruiser a few days ago, police said on Sunday.

The rifle had been snatched from one of the force’s locked cruisers in a Malden parking garage on Thursday.

Troopers found the gun in the Boston area on Sunday, and there’s no sign that someone used the rifle in a crime.

“MSP Troopers a short time ago recovered the patrol rifle stolen from a cruiser Thursday,” Massachusetts State Police tweeted. “There is no evidence that the rifle was used in a subsequent crime. The gun was recovered in Greater Boston area.

“Our investigation is ongoing,” MSP added in the tweet. “No further info is being released at this time.”

On Thursday, State Police had said the burglar entered the cruiser by force before stealing the department-issued patrol rifle that was “secured in a mount.”
