An Arizona sheriff’s deputy was killed after he was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic Wednesday.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Lt. Chad Brackman was working traffic control at around 10 a.m. in Scottsdale, The Associated Press reports. He had been working an overtime shift at the time, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

Brackman, 47, was taken to the hospital and later died from his injuries. The vehicle’s driver also was taken to the hospital, but no details were released about the extent of the injuries.

“We lost a very important member of our community and of the law enforcement community,” Sheriff Paul Penzone said at a news conference, according to the AP.

Brackman had served with the sheriff’s office for 22 years. He is survived by his wife, two children and two stepchildren.

Flags were ordered to be flown at half-staff in honor of Brackman at all state buildings from sunrise to sunset Friday.
