Instead of dismantling stash houses and chasing down alleged human smugglers, Webb County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office deputies hit the streets with a higher purpose on Tuesday morning.
Deputies pulled over several traffic violators. But instead of issuing a citation, deputies surprised drivers with a turkey with all the trimmings.
“One of the drivers that was stopped during a traffic stop stated in Spanish, “Es algo caído del cielo (It’s something that fell from the sky),” said Deputy Mario Landa.
Landa added that the driver had a child with special needs and had not bought the turkey for Thanksgiving due to financial hardship.
Precinct 2 Constable Mike Villarreal said this type of event brings them closer to the community.
“We did this to have a more open line of communication with our community. That way, they’ll feel more comfortable coming and talking to us.
Laredo Gateway Girls Softball League along with the Constable’s Office and other local organizations collected the turkeys to help families in need. They collected more than 130 turkeys that were distributed in many ways, including the traffic stops.
“I want to thank our kindhearted softball players from the Laredo Gateway Girls Softball League and her amazing President Lisa Peterson for making Laredo families happier this Thanksgiving. This group of young ladies donated over a hundred Turkeys and meals to benefit our community,” Villarreal said.
He added, “We were delighted and grateful to help them distribute these meals to our community. I want to thank their parents for teaching them the value of giving and I thank the coaches for carrying out such an important event.
